Lowe Electrical Contractors Leicester Sponsors Environmental Expedition to Borneo

May 2018

When 13 year old Connor Small told us about his opportunity to join the 2019 Camp International Borneo expedition, where he would be partaking in charitable work for the local community, wildlife and environment, we wanted to learn more…

For four weeks next Summer he and his classmates will be heading off to Borneo to immerse themselves in the local Asian Island culture and giving hands on help with a variety of environmental and community projects that may include: digging foundations, painting, making furniture, building water storage and tree planting.

Connor will visit the small isolated community of Mantanani which remains one of the poorest in the region with high levels of unemployment. Many families have set up homestay initiatives to generate income for their families. Connor and his class mates will help by continuing the development of a purpose built office & reception to welcome guests and expand this initiative.

Batu Puteh, another destination, is set in the heart of one of Borneo’s most ancient forests along the banks of the Kinabatangan river where Connor will live alongside elephants and orangutans. He will visit the world-renowned Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary where orphaned and injured orangutans are cared for before they are released back into the wild.

The Camps Foundation, a registered UK charity initiated by Camp International, has an uncompromising commitment that every penny donated will be spent on projects. Before a camp is established they agree the objectives with the community to enhance their way of life, protect their environment and conserve the local wildlife. Their permanent presence in the destination countries allows them to maximise benefits to the people and wildlife that need it most by committing year round to the projects.

“We do social and environmental project work in areas of both economic need and ecological significance. We do adventure through safe, dynamic, and unique expeditions. We do life changing experiences.” Camp International.

Connor has been working hard to make his adventure possible. He has been very busy raising funds and already achieved his first thousand pounds by making bird boxes, herbal balms and valentine sweets, dog walking and fence painting to name just a few!

Lowe Electrical are very pleased to sponsor Connor for his worthy expedition and look forward to hearing about his fund raising progress over the next year and reports back from the trip.
